BUSINESS INNOVATIONS 10S

Business Innovations is an introductory course which allows students to sample the various strands within the Applied Commerce Education program. The course offers students the opportunity to explore commerce related topics such as economics, entrepreneurship, business, marketing, technology and finance. Throughout the course, students will apply the concepts and strategies they learn to a variety of creative business projects and/or simulations.

 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 20S

 Entrepreneurship focuses on developing the foundational skills and ideas needed to plan and develop a business. This course is relevant to high school students since many are already involved in their communities, and are starting to recognize various needs and opportunities in their areas. Students begin by evaluating innovation, inventions, and innovative ideas. They learn the process of planning, marketing, and implementing a venture. This course is designed for students interested in business principles related to the ownership and management of a business.

 

PERSONAL FINANCE 20S

 Personal finance focuses on developing fundamental financial literacy skills, including the value of money, basic economics, budgeting, saving, financial institution services and investing. Many high school students will get their first part-time job while in school or are starting to dream about future purchases that require financial planning such as buying a car, travelling or pursuing a post-secondary education. It is a good option for any student interested in learning more about how to make good personal financial decisions.

 

PROMOTIONS 20S

This course will introduce students to various methods to promote a product or service. They will receive strategies to strengthen their promotional skills. Students will have a hands-on approach with their design projects. Topics covered will include design & layout, advertising, direct marketing, publicity, public relations and interview skills.

 

RETAILING 30S

The course is designed to provide basic business and economic information that will enable students to function as intelligent consumers. Since many business topics are introduced in this program, it will provide the foundation for further business selection and may assist in making career choices. Topics include: business ownership, banking/finance, consumerism, marketing, law and more.

CAREER EXPLORATION/WORK EXPERIENCE – 2 credits

 

This course is intended for students in grade 11 or 12 who would like to explore real job or career opportunities. Students spend approximately three weeks in class preparing resumes and cover letters, as well as developing effective interview and job-hunting skills. Once all assignments are complete, students will then work at their job placement from 12:30pm to 3:30pm Monday to Friday to obtain their credits. They do not receive any monetary compensation. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the workplace. Depending on the employer and student’s timetable, the hours and days could be flexible. Opportunities could include professional careers such as engineering, television, public relations, etc. or may focus on student occupations in retail sales, clerical or service based jobs. Another option is the trades and more specifically, carpentry, auto-body or plumbing. In the Career Exploration course, students are able to choose the field of employment they would like to pursue. This course is a great opportunity for students to receive hands on experience in the field of employment that interests them most. Whether you aspire to a professional career or you simply want to get some work experience that will lead you to summer employment, Career Exploration is a unique opportunity for all students. Most students who do well in their job placement tend to get hired after the course is complete. This course occupies C slot and D slot for a full semester. Student will obtain 2 credits.
