Debate Club
The Debate Club consists of weekly meetings which focus on discussing, exploring and analyzing all sides/perspectives/viewpoints of challenging, complex, and at times controversial topics. Debaters try to see the world objectively, by analyzing and evaluating both sides to an argument. It's a place for students to discover more about their own opinions, as well as to hear the viewpoints of their peers. We share, discuss, and debate using both an informal and formal debate structure.
As part of this process, students engage with the Canadian Parliamentary debate format, which allows them to work closely with a partner to develop a constructive case, face an opposing team and refute contested points, and provide final summaries in their attempts to persuade judges that they have presented the stronger and more convincing argument.
It is a rigorous and highly academic process which requires the debaters to hone their research skills, teaches them the ability to draft and organize a logical and coherent argument, to time manage, and to practice their public speaking, active listening and critical-thinking skills, all while having fun and engaging with their peers in a safe and supportive environment.
Students often choose to participate in monthly tournaments against teams from other schools and school divisions, or take part in events hosted by external organizations such as the Model United Nations and the Youth Parliament of Manitoba as well.

Indigenous Post-Secondary Club
As laid out in the U of M’s strategic plan, a key goal in Creating Pathways to Indigenous Achievement is fostering K-12 Indigenous student participation in post-secondary education. One way the University works towards this is by creating Indigenous post-secondary clubs. Through a partnership between the student recruitment and Indigenous achievement, the U of M initiated a leadership program for students in Grade 9 to Grade 12 with monthly gatherings at four high schools in Winnipeg: Fort Richmond Collegiate, St. James Collegiate, Maples Collegiate, Children of the earth and Garden City Collegiate. Student recruitment officers engage with these students through various activities to get them thinking about post-secondary education.
Gender and Sexuality Alliance
The Gender and Sexuality Alliance is a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ and straight allied students to gather for fun, friendship, and support. GSA aims to promote awareness of queer issues, challenge homophobia and transphobia and create a safer space for all learners
The club also participated in a variety of events including: hosting crafting/board game sessions, hosting guest speakers for workshops from the Rainbow Resource Centre and community organizations, planned an Anti-homophobic language poster campaign, attended a city-wide GSA conference and Queer film festival. All are welcome to attend weekly meetings at lunch.
Musical Production
The Garden City Production is an annual large scale musical production or theatrical play that involves many students in several capacities. Students can audition to join the cast as an actor, singer, dancer or musician in the pitband. The production also offers students opportunities to get involved backstage in stage management, costume and set design. Students who audition and meet production expectations receive a full course credit for the year. The co-curricular program rehearses outside of the regular timetable. The production is a great way to strengthen your artistic skills, make new friends, build confidence and have a memorable year at Garden City! Contact Ms. De Luca if you have any questions. We can't wait to meet you

WEIGHT TRAINING CLUB
In order to use the weight room (when not in a Weight Room based course), students need to become members of the Weight Training club. Each member receives access to the weight room over lunch hour (Mr. Wilks/Mr. Summers coaching) as well as after school – Supervision is provided at least 3x a week (Wed, Thur, Fri) from 3:30 – 4:30 pm (2:30-4:00 on Wednesday with early dismissal). Membership costs $10.00 per semester and all money goes towards purchasing and maintaining equipment for use in our weight room. Members who have spares in their timetable may also train when supervision is provided/room is available.
